Danica McKellar's Adventure in Acting

Danica McKellar is cool, let me tell you why..

Danica's adventure in acting began when she and her family moved to Hollywood when she was eight. After a few bit roles, ( including a few Twilight Zone episodes), she rose to stardom when cast in the role of Winnie Cooper on the television show "The Wonder Years" in 1988. The show centered around Kevin Arnold (played by Fred Savage), and what it was like to grow up in the turbulent time between 1968 to 1973. With his Best Friend Paul, and the love of his youth Winnie, America loved to follow Kevin through the pain and awkwardness of the last traces of childhood.

The Wonder Years- Kevin's First Kiss

This is a clip from the pilot episode. It is considered  classic moment in American Television History

 Give it a watch

With this kiss, Winnie Cooper became the sweetheart of the nation, and took her place alongside Marcia Brady, Annette Funicello and Mary Pickford. Millions of boys in America dreamed of being in Kevin's place that night.

Airing from 1988 to 1993, the show was a major success. It won the Emmy Award for

Best Comedy Series during it's first year, after airing only six episodes.

It followed it up the next year by earning the prestigious Peabody Award. In total the show won 22 awards and nominated a total of 54 times. Millions of Americans tuned in every week to follow the Adventures of Kevin and Winnie. Learn more about the "Wonder Years"  HERE.

Their Last Kiss

This is a clip from the final episode. It too features a kiss.  Give it a watch

For six seasons, we had shared the pain and awkwardness of adolescence with Kevin, Paul and Winnie.

As Kevin says in the final episode; " Every important event in his life somehow involved Winnie." A sentiment shared by most young men in America at the time.

Danica McKellar was a major success. Her role as Winnie Cooper has been enshrined in the hearts of millions, and has become one of the most loved characters in television history. At eighteen years old, Danica had accomplished what most actresses wait a lifetime for. But here's where the story gets really cool.

After the show ended, Danica was strongly encouraged to follow up the role of Winnie, to "cash-in" on her success. But Danica chose to put her acting career on hold for awhile while she went to college. She enrolled in UCLA, expecting to study Film-Making. At UCLA, she decided to try a math class to challenge her brain.

She not only passed that class, she was actually a math whiz. She switched her major to Mathematics. As an undergraduate, she proved and co-authored a mathematic theorem called the Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem. That feat is rarely accomplished by an undergraduate, it was a significant achievement, and resulted in her being the only underclassman to speak at Rutger's University's Statistical Mechanics Conference that year. A member of the prestigous Alpha Delta Pi sorority, she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1998, all ready an accomplished and well-respected mathmetician.  NOW THAT"S COOL !!! Danica proved that you can be cool and smart and pretty all at the same time.

But here's where the adventure becomes really cool. Danica always felt strongly that girls weren't being encouraged to study math or science. That somehow, girls, especially those in middle schools in America were being discouraged from pursuing degrees and careers in those areas, that they were being told that it wasn't cool. She decided to do something about it. She wrote a book.

Danica wrote a book entitled; "Math doesn't Suck, or How to Survive Middle School Math without losing your mind, or breaking a nail."

Danica said that she wrote the book "to show girls that math is accessible and relevant, and even a little glamorous" and to counteract "damaging social messages telling young girls that math and science aren't for them"

With many favorable reviews, and some time on the New York Times Best-Seller list, Danica made appearances all over the country promoting the idea that it IS cool to be smart, that you can be smart and pretty and cool and sexy all at once. By opening up not only about her own reservations about math, but being able to help young girls to reach their full potential in becoming successful young women, Danica has proven to be an inspiration to many girls around the world.

Now, what's cooler than that?

Here is Danica on the Forbes network discussing her book and life since "The Wonder Years" Give it a watch

She explains that she took her first math class just because she felt she wasn't using her brain enough and was looking for a challenge. It shows what a girl can do when they want to be smart.

Danica felt so strongly about empowering girls in Math and Science that she even went before the United States Congress to testify about how to address and fix the problem. Read what she said HERE

Danica wrote a follow-up entitled "Kiss My Math" to make pre-algebra more fun and exciting to middle school students. She showed how to not only master the pre-algebra concepts, but how to have fun doing it. All while still being cool. She has shattered the delusion that smart girls can't be into fashion, and make-up, and cool stuff like that. She has proven that cute and smart is way better than cute and dumb.

She has also published a great website where kids can write in and ask questions, and solve problems they can't figure out. Danica herself answers the questions for them. You can visit Danica's site HERE. Now, how cool is that?

So the next time some one tells us that smart girls can't be pretty, or cool, we have an answer. We have proof.

So from being the top of the television world, to a world renowned mathmatician, how does someone top that? After all that, Danica has returned to her first love, Acting. She has starred in "The West Wing", and "How I Met Your Mother" among others. She's picked up a couple movie roles, and is developing a series called "Inspector Mom". She released a DVD about yoga and meditation called " A Daily Dose of Dharma"

Last year, when she married long time boyfriend Mike Verta, the headlines read "Millions of American Men are Heart-broken today; Winnie Cooper Got Married."

We predict much success in Danica's adventure in acting. It's nice to know that some child stars grow up to be true heroes, that they realize there are so many other things in life than just acting.  She did the most important thing of all, She Made A Difference.

That's why Danica McKellar is so cool.

Updates

It's been announced that Danica and her husband, Mike are expecting their first child. That's not unusual. That happens to married people a lot. The surprising part is Danica announced it on Facebook. She has started a Facebook page and has even got twittered. Go by and welcome her to the digital age.

I'm sure she'd love to hear from you.

On September 7th 2010, Danica gave birth to a son, Draco, (Draco means Dragon). Surely another Mad Scientist in the works here. Danica is still one of our favorite geeks.

“We are humbled, overjoyed and so grateful for this miraculous gift,” Danica and Mike told People in a statement. “It’s like we’ve only now just learned the true meaning of love.”
