This whole thing started one day when Sunny got a letter from her friend back home asking for help for her dad. Seems some kind of skunk was causing all kinds of trouble for him.
Sunny read us the letter. It was from her friend Riley, back in Silver Springs. Seems some kind of skunk was causing trouble for Riley's Dad, Rocky. She thought there were some forged documents at the bank, and now the dastardly Dan was going to throw them off the homestead unless Rocky could raise $10,000 by Saturday. Riley said she didn't know who else to ask for help, so she wrote and asked Sunny for help. Sunny asked me, and I asked Uncle Mike.
Uncle Mike remembered an old business we had a controlling interest in way out west, and thought now would be a good time to go check up on it. I decided the girls and I had better tag along. You know how things go when Uncle Mike goes off on adventure. Despite all that, I thought it best all of us came along. Good thing too.
The "Business", turned out to be a dirty old dance hall named "The Yellow Rose". What a dump !The girls and I went right to work cleaning and getting the place right. I was surprised to see the surplus of dust that they have in Texas. Since Lil started dancing at Dan's place, The Yellow Rose had fallen on hard times.
After a couple long days, the place was ready to go. Sunny's friend, Riley, came down and helped us kick off the Grand Opening of the Yellow Rose. She was actually pretty good. Check it out.
Riley told us how Dirty Dan Dastard had been giving her Dad a hard time about the ranch. Dan's bank was calling the deed, and if her dad didn't come up with $10,000 the bank would foreclose on the ranch.
Sunny whispered to us, that the ranch wasn't the only thing Dan had his eye on. It's been a long standing feud in these parts, and she promised to give us the details later. I never did get those details, but it was pretty obvious what was going on.
Lil was quite the looker. She was the singer in the dance hall, and all the cowboys liked her, especially Dan. Dan knew one of the reasons the Yellow Rose was so busy is that all the cowboys would come in to see Lil sing and dance. This meant that very few cowboys were going into Dan's place, "The Dusty Cactus", and those that were couldn't dance, so business was bad for Dan.
Dan was thinking that if Lil was singing at The Dusty Cactus, business would pick up. You see, the only thing that Dan liked more than Lil, was money. Dan asked and asked Lil to come work for him, but she kept saying NO. Her heart belonged to Rocky. So Dan finally found a way to forge some papers at the bank, and foreclose on Rocky's spread.
Lil had gone to work for Dan at the Dusty Cactus, trying to earn the $10,000 but luck was running out. Dan was calling the deed on Saturday, and payday wasn't until Monday. It seemed hopeless.
That night, Uncle Mike took me along to see an old friend of his, Chief Baltasar. We had a great time. Seems those two have known each other a long time. A Long, long time.
Rumors and legends of their old adventures still reverberate in the Texas Hills.
Uncle Mike asked his old friend about Dan, and what the smelly old skunk was up to. Seems the chief knew
"The Skunk" all too well. So we sat through the night around the fire, making plans. Uncle Mike and Old Chief Baltasar laughed, and sang, and plotted until dawn.
In between the jokes, and some obscure references about some senorita down in Nogales that neither Uncle Mike, nor Chief Baltasar would explain, those two devised a plot. At one point, I remember asking if it would work. Uncle mike said any fool would fall for it. I asked him, "How do we know Dan is a fool?"
Baltasar said it was easy, the same way you tell any other fool; A fool talks, while a wise one speaks; a fool hears, while a wise one listens.
As things usually go in Texas, sometime during the night, the guitars were pulled out.
Now, Uncle Mike had a plan. And you know how things go when Uncle Mike plans things. Rocky was a proud man, and wouldn't just take the money from us. So we had to find a way to save the ranch, get our customers back into the Yellow Rose, to help re-unite Rocky and Lil, and teach Dan a lesson about being a skunk. A lot to do, and little time to do it in. The girls decided to shake things up down at the Yellow Rose and Uncle Mike put his plan in action.
