Kandy's Adventure Finding the Black Pearl,

(oh.., and Zak, too)

It all started one day as Uncle Mike was digging in the yard and found a map. It was a map to the lost treasure of the Black Pearl. So, you know Uncle Mike, off we went to find it. The map said we needed to get to someplace called Skullbone Island. We needed to rent a boat and sail there. Looks like another adventure brewing.

It says there will be pirates, and voodoo witchdoctors. Oh Boy, I just love adventures.

I figured if we were going to run into some pirates, I had better learn a few things about them.  So, while Uncle Mike was renting the boat, I fired up the laptop, and was able to learn a few things about Pirates.

I love Google

It turns out, the Black Pearl is the first of four stones held by the four Pirate Clans around the world. It was last seen by the Black Pirate Clan. Uncle Mike's map says it was buried on a small island in the Carribean, Skullbone Island.

Here is a map showing the current Pirate Clans and where they sail.

We had a great Adventure, and Uncle Mike got the Black Pearl. But he's not saying what he did with it. It's almost like it disappeared. He says he gave it away, but I don't know about that. Anyway, back to the story...

Uncle Mike rented a , shall we say, cheap boat named The Sea Hag. But it was cool, I got to drive for awhile. We played Pirates and I even got to practice my sword fighting.

My New Pirate Buddy

I got to meet a lot of new friends. I even found out the crummy old boat Uncle Mike rented was haunted. After the initial shock, the Ghost Captain turned out to be very nice. He even taught me a new Pirate Song. He also told me an old pirate legend about a Boy Captain who leads a crew of Zombie Pirates.  He said Captain Zak was the meanest, most ruthless pirate to sail for the Black Pirate Clan. Captain Zak was based near Skullbone Island, so I needed to be prepared. I was ready, I wasn't afaid of some boy pirate.

We finally got to Skullbone Island. Uncle Mike and  Captain Scepter found the spot marked on the map and started digging. Sure enough, it was there.  A big old Treasure Chest. Full of all kinds of shiny stuff. And the Black Pearl.

The Black Pearl is another story in itself, remind me to tell you about it some day. Follow news about the Pearl HERE

That night we fell asleep exhausted. It was a busy day, and it felt like it. We fell asleep not knowing what lurked around the island at night, but we soon found out.

At that exact moment, on the other side of the island, another ship landed. And on that ship was the dreaded Captain Zak and his crew of Zombies.

There were legends about the boy Captain everywhere. Books were written, songs were sung, and glasses raised to the scourge of Skullbone Island; Captain Zak.

He had come to Skullbone Island when he was very young, and soon rose to be the leader of the Zombie Pirate Crew. It was easy for him, since he was the only one who actually had a brain left. Crafty, Cunning, (and cute), he was feared among the natives, and toasted by pirate clans everywhere. He was the only one who could control the Zombie Pirates. Where Zak came from, and how he got to Skullbone Island was a mystery, no one was really sure. Some say he washed up on the beach, some say he dropped from a UFO, and still others say he ran off when he was a baby to join the pirates, and the Zombies found him. Since he could actually read a map, and knew East from West, they named him the Captain. Captain Zak, the Scourge of Skullbone Island.

Legends about the boy captain were everywhere.

Captain Zak had heard the Pearl was found, he and his zombies were going to get it. But to get it, they were going to have to go through me. And I wasn't afraid of any old boy pirate.

He came into camp thinking  he could just steal it. I guess he was a bit surprised to out he wasn't the only one to know how to use a sword

Something funny happened though, when I beat him. I thought he'd get mad, or maybe run off. But he just stood there with a goofy grin on his face. There was something not quite right with the boy.

It turns out that Zak was also from Morning side Heights, and had indeed run away when he was a baby to join the pirates. He decided he was a little tired of playing pirates, and asked Uncle Mike if he could go back to Morningside heights with us. Uncle Mike, of course said yes. You should see what happened when we got back, but that's another story all in itself.

Well along the way back, we had to fight off the Zombie Pirates, got to meet some really nice island Natives, and all kinds of other adventures. You can read the book if you want all the details, and to this day, they are searching for the Pearl. Uncle Mike laughs it off, but I think it's a little scary knowing the Black Pirate Clan is looking for you.

The funny thing is though, after we went through all that trouble to get the Black Pearl, Uncle Mike just gave it away. He told me, what he really wanted was the treasure box it came in. He told me all little girls need a treasure box. A place for them to keep their hopes and dreams. He said most treasure boxes, especially the ones the pirates have, come full of trinkets and baubles. He said you have to empty them out, so you can put your hopes and dreams in them to keep them safe. And that was the true treasure. He said the Pearl was just a bauble, and the gold, just trinkets. That the true treasure is a little girl's hopes and her dreams.  He said I can make a wish, lock it in the box, and it will stay alive forever. He said the world is full of baubles and beads, easy to find, easy to lose. That the only treasure worth keeping safe in a treasure box is your dreams. That your hopes and wishes are a far greater treasure than any pirate gold.
