Being Smart in Cyber-Space

  Hey Gang, are you new to the internet? Remember, when you are on-line you are in my neighborhood. It's a great place, and there are a lot of things to see and learn and do. So, logically, this would be the best place to begin to learn about what happens in my neighborhood. We also have more tips in the following pages about life in the digital world. Just like in the Human World, you need to keep a few things in mind while you are out and wandering around. Practicing a few Smart ideas while you're here will make sure your adventures are fun and exciting. Here are some basic rules from Safekids.com you need to know;

 1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.*

2. I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.

3. I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.

4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.*

5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.

6. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

7. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.

8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family’s privacy*

9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.

10. I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.

Remember, experiment 21 proved that safe=smart; therefore; smart=safe.

  Are you an old hand like me? Been hanging around my 'hood for awhile? Even then there are still some thing we need to do to keep safe. As a teen, there are even more things we need to do to stay smart on-line.

   If you’re a teen, or a parent of a teenager, you might feel that you don’t need the same restrictions and controls as younger kids. You may be right, but just because you’re older doesn’t mean that you’re out of danger. Teenagers are actually more likely to get into trouble online than younger children. Teens are more likely to explore out-of-the-way nooks and crannies of cyberspace; they’re more likely to reach out to people outside of their immediate peer groups; and, sadly, they’re more often preyed upon as victims by child molesters and other exploiters.  Not only do you have to remember all the rules that apply to the newbies; as teens use social networks a whole lot more and almost all of us have a phone now. But like in the Human World; with greater freedom comes greater responsibilities. Check out the links below for a few idea's

Are you a parent? Worried about turning your progeny over to the world-wide web? Heard a million scary stories? Or are you just being a smart grown-up? Here are some sources for information and resources to get you started. The internet is a great tool , but like anything, we need to keep an eye on the kids.  How good their experience on-line becomes is largely up to you.
